Eucalypt species
Whilst not botanically from the Ash or Oak families Australia's Eucalypt timbers have been traditionally referred to by trade names incorporating the words Ash or Oak.
Perhaps this practice stems from the fact that the trade name refers to a colour variant, which may have been sourced from two or more species.
Referring to the botanical species name is of little use when buying or specifying veneers.
As the largest producer of Eucalypt veneers in the world, Gunns have adopted the following trade names for the various colour groups depicted in the chart. Whilst available as solid timbers Eucalypt timbers sourced from Victoria's forests aren't readily available as veneers, as such the term Victorian Ash is to some extent, a misnomer in respect of veneers.
