What is Veneer?

Veneers are thin slices of natural wood. Up to 1,000 slices can be taken from each metre of log. Veneer leaf is usually joined into sheets, called 'layons' and bonded to suitable substrates e.g. MDF, Particleboard etc. Veneers are a highly efficient way of using a valuable forest resource. Of Tasmania's total annual eucalypt harvest of 3.5 million tonnes, only 20 thousand tonnes meet the stringent requirement for veneer logs.

What species are available?

The Eucalypt species sourced from Tasmania's sustainably managed forests provide the majority of Gunns production and are sold in leaf and layon form as:-
- Tasmanian Ash
- Tasmanian Oak
- Highland Oak
- Stringybark Oak
and natural feature grades.

Gunns also slice a range of other veneers.
- Black Heart Sassafras
- Golden Sassafras
- Tasmanian Blackwood
- Tasmanian Myrtle

Also specialty veneers, Burls, Figured Eucalypt, Huon Pine, Celery Top Pine and Leatherwood (subject to availability) ... and of course Radiata Pine.
