Wilderness Society Still Getting it Wrong on Pulp Mill
10 November 2008
Gunns Limited has called on The Wilderness Society to stop making inaccurate claims about the company's proposed Bell Bay Pulp Mill.
The Wilderness Society claims the mill would use 80% native forest when the actual figure on commencement was less than half that.
The mill will be plantation-based and aims to use 100% plantation timber within five years - no wood from old growth forests will be used in the mill.
"The Wilderness Society should be applauding a project which will build the most environmentally friendly pulp mill in the world, creating thousands of much-needed new jobs in Northern Tasmania"
"They should be supportive of a project which creates downstream processing, one that will not result in extra trees being cut down and will use woodchips that are currently exported offshore”
Gunns is committed to building the mill at Bell Bay Industrial Estate, which is the most environmentally and economically viable location.
